“When I think about what the natural world means to me, I see it as something similar to or something that stands for nature, rather than derived from it. I think it is natural to have urges and desires, to seek to understand something, to search for answers, just as I think it is natural to create.”
— Nicole Lian Aponte
Within each canvas, I partake in three realms: the physical, the emotional, and the unknown. The physical realm is all about materials: the different colors of paint and the manner in which the canvas absorbs them. The emotional realm is about myself as an artist and individual at this point in time. I form connections with people, places, and things; my painting process helps me decipher the world around me, consider how I am interacting with it, and comprehend what I am feeling in times of change versus consistency. The unknown realm is where my questions lie – How have the events in my life come together and brought me to paint in this manner? It is not necessary for my paintings to reflect these questions, but rather they are necessary for me to have a platform for freedom of expression and meditation within a state of flux.
